The Tale of the Midnight Sun Pony
Once upon a time in a land far away, called the Middle Kingdom (of Tennessee) there was a Farmer who had a black and white pony. This was a Good and Noble Pony, who the Farmer had bred from his Old Stud Horse and a beautiful pony mare. This Pony had carried the Farmer’s children while they learned to ride. The Farmer, with the aid of a Man Wise in the Ways of Ponies, had even taught the Pony many wondrous ticks, such as counting his age and bowing before noble visitors.
It came to pass that the Farmer’s children grew tall. The farmer loved this Pony, but knew that the time had come for him to move on and teach other children the equestrian way. He sold the Pony to a man who promised to give him a good home.
Some years later the Farmer was visiting the Show Barn of a Great Lord who possessed many fine Tennessee Walking Horses of Noble Lineage. As he moved through the Barn, struck dumb by its magnificence, a Knight who boarded some of his horses at this Barn called upon him to observe his recently purchased Midnight Sun pony. When the farmer cast his gaze upon the pony, his heart leapt with joy for it was the self same Pony he had sold so many years before. He said, "Sir Knight, this is no Midnight Sun pony. This is same Pony that taught my children to ride." "Nay, Good Farmer," quoth the Knight, "This is indeed a Midnight Sun Pony, as I have his Papers right here. Behold his pedigree, complete with the King’s Seal!"
The Farmer shook his head sadly. "Sir Knight, you have been bamboozled."
The Knight became wroth with the Farmer and drawing his snicker-snee he demanded an apology. The Farmer, however, was not frightened. He told the Knight that the Man Wise in the Way of Ponies was even then just down the road from the Barn. He said he would prove to the Knight that, indeed, a swindle had been done. The Farmer sent a lad to fetch the Wise Man, who came in haste.
When the Wise Man saw the Pony he said to the Knight "Indeed, this is the Noble Pony to which I imparted many things. Behold…" At the command of the Wise Man, the Noble Pony counted his age, bowed before the Knight, and performed other wondrous deeds. The Knight returned his sword to its sheath and begged the forgiveness of the Farmer.
But the Farmer said, "Never fear, Worthy Knight, you could not have known of this foul deception. But alas, if I had known that my own worthy stud horse could produce Midnight Sun ponies, I would have charged a higher stud fee."
